Hu Chocolate Bars – The Reluctant Food Critic

These heavenly chocolate morsels are my favorite after dinner treat. Ever since I tried Hu all other chocolate pales in comparison.  While Hu could definitely be classified under the indulgent tab, it’s ingredients, or rather lack thereof, encourage me to give it a healthy classification as well.  It is made of 70% organic house-ground cocoa and it is vegan, has no gluten, no refined sugar, no cane sugar, no sugar alcohols, no dairy, no GMOs, no emulsifiers, and no soy lecithin.

I find that while some chocolate bars flip the “I need 10 squares more switch” with Hu, 1 or 2 squares hits the spot.  I am a sugar lover, or possibly a self diagnosed sugar addict.  The post meal sugar cravings often coming knocking at my door.  On a good day, I can drink a mug of herbal tea or eat a small bowl of berries to ease the craving away.  Other days, I start rummaging through my snack drawer like a frequent shopper on Black Friday.

Berries have a lower sugar content and I like that when I eat them, I can check off a box on my daily fruit intake and I don’t suffer the guilt afterwards.  However, whenever I’m tired or stressed, my bowl of berries soon becomes a trough of berries and the “low sugar content” no longer carries much weight. I have also found that when I completely cut all desserts, I soon feel restricted, my resolve breaks, and I overindulge. Over indulging for me starts off with one after dinner cookie and ends up with a dessert after every meal. Once I’m on the sugar train, I have trouble getting off again. So, to appease the sugar monster lurking inside, I break off one or two little squares of a Hu Chocolate bar.  I get my dessert fix without the sugar hangover. So, the next time you’re looking for a tasty chocolate treat without the sugar overload or guilt, try Hu Chocolate Bars and thank me later.

My personal favorites are the SIMPLE DARK CHOCOLATE, the SALTY DARK CHOCOLATE, and the CASHEW BUTTER & RASPBERRY JELLY DARK CHOCOLATE.  Other flavors include: ALMOND BUTTER & PUFFED QUINOA, CASHEW BUTTER &VANILLA BEAN, HAZELNUT BUTTER DARK CHOCOLATE, HUNKS CASHEWS & VANILLA BEAN, HUNKS ALMOND & SEA SALT, HUNKS SOUR GOLDENBERRIES, VANILLA QUINOA CRISPY, and CRUNCHY BANANA.  I have purchased them at Central Market, Whole Foods and online via their website www.hukitchen.com. Shout out to my former physical therapist Jennifer Ratner of Ratner Center Physical Therapy and Wellness in Fort Worth, Texas for introducing me to Hu Chocolate. https://ratnerpt.com
